Conseil supérieur de l'éducation

Council

The Conseil supérieur de l'éducation (CSE) comprises 22 members - including its President - representing the field of education and other sectors of Québec society.

These members are appointed by the Government following consultation with associations or organizations that are most representative of students, parents, teachers, school administrators and socio-economic groups. The Deputy Minister of Education, Recreation and Sport or his or her substitute is ex officio an associate member, but is not entitled to vote.

The members of the CSE are appointed to a four-year mandate, which can only be renewed once.

The members of the CSE receive no salary, with the exception of the President, who has a full-time salaried position. The members of the CSE must adhere to its code of ethics and professional conduct, the Code d'éthique et de déontologie PDF document.

Claude LESSARD

Claude Lessard, presidentClaude Lessard has been active in the world of education for the past 40 years, as a parent, research professor and university administrator. His research interests include the sociology and psychosociology of the work of teachers and teaching, as well as analyses of education policy and change. Co-founder of the Centre de recherche interuniversitaire sur la formation et la profession enseignante (CRIFPE), Lessard has sought to develop critical thinking of education without distancing himself from players in the field. After obtaining Bachelor and Master’s degrees from the Université de Montréal, in 1975 Lessard received his Ph.D from the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (OISE). He was Professor of Sociology of Education in Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Education, where he held the post of Dean from 1991 to 1995. He also taught in and later directed the university’s Graduate Doctoral Program in Applied Social Sciences between 2004 and 2008. During the early 1980s he was a member of the Conseil franco-québécois d’orientation pour la prospective et l’innovation en éducation (COPIE). Between 2001 and 2006, he was a member of the Conseil supérieur de l’éducation (CSE), where he also chaired the Commission on Elementary Education from 2005 to 2006. Lessard has been a Canada Research Chairholder on education staff and professions and a member of the governing board of Frontier College, a Canada-wide organization devoted to adult literacy. In 2009, he chaired a committee for the Conseil de la science et de la technologie (CST) on knowledge translation and a research strategy to promote the development of adult education and training.
